Oil Pump Fitting Instructions

Engine oil pump upgrade: Installation Procedure

Models: Ford Ranger / Mazda BT50

Engines: Ford Duratorq P4AT / P5AT TDCI Puma Power Stroke

Warning: It is highly recommended and good practice to charge the oil system in this engine after an engine rebuild or oil pump replacement. This is best done with a pressurised pre-lube oil tank - it can be a hand pump or compressed air model. The easiest location for the oil fill is the oil pressure switch.

Purpose:

The Genuine oil pump that is fitted to these engines is a vane type pump. The vane pumps have issues with wear on the vanes and priming problems after oil changes. This upgrade kit contains a gear type oil pump that replaces the Genuine vane pump.

Kit Contents:

Gear Oil Pump

M8 x 16mm hex socket button screw with copper washer

O-Ring

Procedure:

  1. Remove the banjo bolt that is securing the oil pressure pipe. This is the pipe that runs from the bottom of the cradle to the pump. Remove pipe and put aside as the gear pump does not require this pipe

  2. Substitute the banjo bolt with supplied M8 x 16mm bolt and copper washer and tighten to 10Nm. Not fitting this bolt will result in a no or low oil pressure situation

  3. Push the chain tensioner plunger in and insert pin. Remove tensioner.

  4. Remove the 4 bolts securing the oil pump to the engine and remove

    New Pump Installation

  5. Lube inside if the new gear pump with assembly grease, ensuring the teeth are all coated.
Note: This can be done without disassembly of the pump through the inlet port of the pump

  6. Install the new gear pump and install the 4 securing bolts finger tight to hold it in place.

  7. Fit the tensioner and chain, tension bolts to 15 Nm and release the pin from the tensioner.

  8. Check the alignment of the pump gear and chain. Note: Ensure the pump gear and crankshaft gear are parallel and the faces aligned. Check that the pump gear teeth are positioned in the middle of the chain after then engine has been rotated by hand.

  9. Tension the 4 pump mounting bolts to 10 Nm. Check alignment after tightening the bolts.

  10. Replace the oil pickup tube o-ring with the one provided.

  11. Install the oil pickup tube in the pump. Add a drop of removable thread locker on the bolt before installation.

  12. Fit the pickup tube to the cradle with the retaining bolt with a drop of removable thread locker on the bolt and tension to 10 Nm.

  13. Remove the old sealant from the block and sump and clean. Test fit the sump before installing and you will probably find you have interference between a section of the oil pan baffle and a bolt hole boss on the new oil pump housing.

  14. Grind out a small half-moon section in the baffle rib. See attached photos Fig-1
