Problems:
VM Transit gearbox failures are mainly due to weak quality components. One of the most significant issues is the three front bearings on the main shaft collapsing due to these poor-quality made bearings.
Its a problem that needs to be identified early to ensure there is no further damage to the gearbox main shaft 5th & 6th helical gear sets. A damaged bearing may result in the main shaft replacement, and this is very costly procedure.
In 2011 Ford made attempts to fix these issues. A replaceable sleeve was put on the main shaft to prevent permanent damage when the bearings collapsed, and new bearings were sourced from a European manufacturer. They didn’t succeed with this and failures still occur.
Solution:
To combat these issues, all of our reconditioned gearboxes here at Smart Replacement Parts are built with high-quality Japanese made bearings. These are much less likely to fail than the original ones.
We also use an upgraded replaceable European made main shaft sleeve. In the unlikely event that the Japanese bearings do collapse, this shaft sleeve ensures no permanent damage to the main shaft.
To maintain the high quality of our reconditioned gearboxes and to minimise any risk of damage to the synchro rings – we recommend using only fully synthetic 75/90 oil.
