Ford Transit ASM shift pump failure

Problem:
The third generation Ford Transit was introduced with a new system called the Auto Shift Manual transmission. This was a nice feature which allowed for the switching between Automatic and Manual. The system is great for heavy loads and towing, however it tends to fail over time due to wear and tear.
Over time and higher mileage the pump became prone to failure. With symptoms such as being locked into a gear, being stuck in reverse and even losing all gears and drive.
This problem will start intermittently and may only play up on occasion however as the problem persists the symptoms will get progressively worse which will eventually lead to complete loss of gears or the vehicle being stuck in gear permanently with complete failure of the pump.
Another way to tell if your Ford Transit ASM is malfunctioning is to listen to the shift pump. When opening the driver’s door, the pump should prime and make a buzzing sound. This is the pump building up pressure to the rest of the system. It can also be a problem if the pump continually runs and does not shut off after 30 seconds.
Solution:
- Replace the original shift pump with a second-hand unit. Although we inspect these through our quality control department they still run the risk of the same problem happening again in the future. This would be the cheapest option however will come with a high risk of failure in the future.
- Replace the original high-pressure pump with a fully reconditioned ASM pump. The reco pumps are stripped down and fitted with stronger internal components. Our technician that reconditions these units was a former high-level aviation engineer in the Australian Air Force and has found a way to not only recondition the pumps but also stopping this problem from happening again in the future.
- ASM Auto to Full Manual Conversions for Ford Transit. This option will eliminate the Ford Transit ASM system entirely and allow us to modify your existing system into a fully manual gearbox. This solution is the most expensive option but will give you peace of mind of never having to worry about an ASM problem again. We freight Australia Wide and to the United Kingdom & New Zealand.
